Tobruk Memorial Pool - MMP Architects
Designed in Cairns is an initiative through the Australian Institute of Architects FNQ Regional Members Committee and held in conjunction with The Cairns Institute, JCU. It provides continuing professional development activities for architects and designers generally in the regions and interesting opportunities for discussions and information for anyone interested in regional design.

This Seminar
The Tobruk Pool Redevelopment presented MMP with an opportunity to investigate and experience the long and deep history embedded in the original building and its association with the heroes of Tobruk.
With Council’s desire to retain the original façade, our concept needed a sensitive, innovative solution to ensure both old and new sit harmoniously in the surrounding urban context and make it’s make in today’s modern world.
The Presenter – Michael Martino
Born in an ancient village high in the Calabrian hills of southern Italy, Michael immigrated to Australia in 1965. Growing up in the FNQ he lost his accent but found his passion in architecture. As a director of MMP, he strives to enrich the lives of all his clients through caring design. He believes in form follows function but good architecture in today’s society needs to also challenge people’s perceptions and look past the practical function of our buildings. He searches for excitement in architecture to rival his excitement when driving a red Ferrari.
