Professor Allan Dale was part of the ‘Our Tropical North Queensland’ delegation to Federal Parliament between the 18 and 21 of November 2024. This significant initiative, led by Advance Cairns, the Cairns Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) brought together 25 prominent regional leaders, including Cairns Regional Council Mayor Amy Eden and other local government representatives from across the region.
Over the course of the visit, the delegation conducted more than 30 meetings with senior Australian Government officials, Opposition members, and crossbench leaders, ensuring that Far North Queensland’s collective voice was heard at the highest levels.
Diverse Advocacy for the Region
The delegation represented a wide spectrum of community stakeholders, reflecting the region's varied needs and aspirations. From aviation leaders advocating for sustainable fuels, to health and education representatives championing expanded programs.
Every voice contributed to the region’s unified priorities.
Discussions centered on critical issues impacting Far North Queensland, including:
• Water Security: Advocating for increased Federal funding to ensure Cairns’ long-term water supply and regional water development.
• Health and Education: Expanding healthcare services and medical training programs to address regional demands.
• Infrastructure and Connectivity: Improving road, rail, and aviation links to support economic growth.
• Tourism Growth: Securing investments in tourism infrastructure to solidify Cairns as a premier gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.
• Defence and Climate Resilience: Positioning Cairns as a strategic Northern Australia defence hub and enhancing disaster preparedness.
Delegation Highlights
According to Advance Cairns, the delegation’s influence was evident throughout Parliament:
• Parliamentary Recognition: The Minister for Northern Australia formally acknowledged the delegation in the annual Northern Australia statement, and the Speaker of the House referenced their presence during Question Time. Parliamentarians showed their support by wearing TNQ-branded scarves and ties.
• Regional Advocacy: The delegation participated in the Regional Australia Institute’s progress report on regional ambition, reinforcing the need for policies that empower Far North Queensland.
Professor Allan Dale emphasized the importance of initiatives like this in ensuring the region’s needs remain a priority on the national agenda. He said “the delegation enables the region to engage directly with policymakers, advocate for our priorities, and strengthen relationships that drive meaningful change.
This unified effort underscores the commitment to advancing Far North Queensland's unique opportunities while addressing its challenges”.
