Thriving Kids in Disaster Report

The Thriving Queensland Kids Partnership (TQKP) is a Queensland-based intermediary and relationships broker focused on systems change for the benefit of children and youth. Instigated and hosted by ARACY - Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth, TQKP brings together a cross-sectoral coalition of Queensland leaders, organisations, practitioners, and collaborators working together with the shared purpose of improving the conditions for Queensland children and young people to thrive.

In 2023, TCI entered into an MOU with TQKP to host Partnership Officer, Jacinta Perry at the Institute. Jacinta leads the Country Collaborative, a collective of passionate and diverse leaders aimed at instigating systems change approaches to support the health and wellbeing of kids in rural, regional and remote Queensland communities. The Country Collaborative has grown to a partnership of over 25 NGOs, government departments, university and philanthropic collaborators spanning sectors such as education, early childhood, workforce, regional community development, health, wellbeing and the arts. The Country Collaborative is generously funded by the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation (TFFF) and the John Villiers Trust (JVT).

A recent success for TQKP was the release of the Thriving Kids in Disasters (TKiD) report. Commissioned by JVT, TKiD has harnessed the collective insights of a coalition of critical friends, partners and collaborators to develop a series of principles and recommendations concerning how we might best gear our systems to support the needs of kids in disasters. Findings have been presented recently at the Cairns Early Years Conference, PUQ’s Science of Disasters forum and the Cairns Regional Council’s Eco-fiesta and point to the increasing need of systems leaders and communities to consider the escalating incidence and impact of disasters on children and young people in light of climate change.
