To celebrate the United Nations’ decision to establish 29 June as the annual International Day of the Tropics a special public lecture will be live streamed to The Cairns Institute from James Cook University Singapore campus. It will be an afternoon event with times to be confirmed. The 29th of June was selected as it is the anniversary of the launch of the inaugural State of the Tropics 2014 report, the first major output of the State of the Tropics project, which is convened by JCU and draws on the expertise of leading institutions from around the world.
Following from the public lecture will be the celebration of the Anthropological Laboratory for Tropical Audiovisual Research (ALTAR) exhibition that features two tropical regions the Amazon and Sepik. The exhibition engages the viewers with the sensuous details of things, which are seen, touched, and eaten on regular basis, but they are rarely photographed by a “macro lens” and used to portray people’s lifeworld. The exhibition presents different research methods used in research, including language data collection, ethnography, participant observation, art-based methods, use of photography and video as a catalyst for things to happen and a means of engaging with the world.
Entertainment will be provided by Siale, a family group of singers and dancers aged 3+, performing a traditional chant into the song of the Hiri trade - a fast Koe and contemporised song.
Refreshments will be provided so please RSVP for catering purposes at alumni.jcu.edu.au/SoT2017
